When should I start the process of applying for an accommodation?
While the accommodation process can begin at any time, here is our suggested timeline for requesting disability accommodations:
- Incoming fall students should submit their and provide documentation by July 1
- Incoming fall students with accommodation requests that involve disability related on-campus living needs should submit their and provide documentation by May 15
- Incoming spring students should submit their and provide documentation by Dec. 15

I have a disability — do I automatically get accommodations?
No — It is important to remember that although your disability is having an impact on some area of your life (academics, daily living, etc.), that does not necessarily mean that there is the presence of a disability-related barrier that would necessitate the authorization of an equal access accommodation.

How long does the process take?
The length of the process varies depending on the time of year, how quickly students respond to SSD staff outreach, and what type of documentation is available. -
How will my professors know I have accommodations?
Students will submit a Semester Request Form each semester to let SSD know which professors should be notified of accommodations. Professors will then be electronically notified. Students then meet with their professors to discuss the implementation of accommodations. -
What information will be shared with my professors?
SSD only shares a student’s accommodations with professors. Professors are not notified of a student’s diagnosis or the reason accommodations are needed. -
My professor said that I am not allowed to use any accommodations in their class —
what should I do?
Professors are not allowed to deny any accommodations provided by the SSD office. If a professor has a concern about an accommodation they should contact the SSD office. You can also contact the SSD office if you meet with a professor and they deny an accommodation authorized by our office. -
Why are some of my classes not showing up in the Accommodate portal?
If you make any changes to your class schedule such as dropping and adding classes, the changes won’t display in the system until the following day. -
Does my IEP/504 automatically transfer to 91ÉçÇø?
Accommodations from high school do not transfer to 91ÉçÇø. However, they may be taken into consideration when determining whether students are in need of accommodations. -
Do the accommodations I was authorized for at my previous institution transfer over
to 91ÉçÇø?
Accommodations from other colleges or universities do not transfer to 91ÉçÇø. However, they may be taken into consideration when determining whether students are in need of accommodations. -
Will my transcript show that I need accommodations?
There is no indication on transcripts that a student needs accommodations. -
Can my parents complete this process for me?
No, parents are not able to complete the process for students. Students are required to self disclose with the SSD office and participate in the intake process in order to be authorized for accommodations. -
Does SSD provide tutoring, counseling or organizational coaching?
SSD does not provide these services, but 91ÉçÇø offers many free support services for students. You can read more about what is available on our Campus Resources page.
SSD does have a full-time Academic Skills Navigator that can provide one-on-one targeted support for students, which can include skills related to time management and organization, study strategies, stress management, social interactions, health and wellness, role playing and social scripts, self-advocacy and daily living skills.

Can I talk with someone to learn more about SSD and accommodation before I decide
to register?

If I have a disability, am I required to register for an accommodation with SSD?
The only time a student is required to register is if they wish to be authorized for equal access accommodations. Not all students with disabilities require accommodations, so it is always the choice of the student whether they wish to register or not.

Can I register with SSD at any time?
Students can complete their registration with SSD anytime during the semester or during their academic career at 91ÉçÇø. Students should be aware that they must submit a request for accommodations for each semester and that accommodations are not retroactive.

Why do I have to submit a request for accommodations each semester?
Students are required to submit an accommodations letters request each semester as every semester classes change. Students have the ability to select which classes they would like to request their accommodation letters. For more information, visit the requesting accommodations page.

I have a new diagnosis, how do I know if I need accommodations?

Can I access accommodations if I am in a graduate or doctoral program?
Yes, absolutely! SSD works with students with disabilities at all educational levels that are in need of accommodations.

I was waived from the foreign language requirement in high school. Does 91ÉçÇø
waive the World Language requirement for students with disabilities?
No, the foreign language requirement is not waived for students with disabilities. Students are encouraged to review the World Language requirement information and contact SSD with any questions.

I am planning to study abroad — will my accommodations be applied when I am in a different
country?
Student accommodations are not guaranteed when a student is studying outside the United States, but the SSD office works closely with the International Education and Global Initiatives office to inform students of any existing procedures for student accommodation requests at their chosen institution abroad, as well as non-academic disability-related needs (such as access to medical care).

Can I access accommodations for my Calculus Placement Exam or Chemistry Pre-test?
Some students are required to take the Calculus Placement Exam or the Chemistry Pre-test. Students can use accommodations if needed on these exams, and will need to connect with SSD to learn what is needed to set up the accommodations.

I'm pregnant and it's impacting my access to a 91ÉçÇø program – what should I
do?
Students who are pregnant or nursing and are seeking accommodations should contact the Title IX office. The Title IX coordinator will discuss what resources and accommodations may be available and will help facilitate conversations with the necessary offices or academic departments.
